Day # 330

The photo challenge for today was humour! While leaving this morning…I had notice this was growing in the front lawn!

Day # 330 "Snow mushroom"

We found a few of these snow mushrooms. I wonder if they are edible, I wonder how they would cook up? Lol!

I hope you had a wonderful day!

Photo Challenge Day # 329

Day # 329

I remember the days (not so long ago) that my friend Terry and I we use to make wine. We started by using a local company in town. Then we branched out and made it at home. His home. It was fun and a great way of making, collecting different wines, from whites, to white Zinfandel to assorted reds. Terry and his wife moved away….and sadly my bottles had remained empty. Still drinking wine, but visiting the local establishments to stock up.

Today, we bottled, White Zinfandel and a Pinot Grigio a white wine. Maybe this will be the start of a new collection of wines in my wine racks.

Day # 329 "White Zinfandel"

I am looking forward in not only doing a taste of this new batch of wine we just bottled. But, also starting a couple more batches.

Now just think how nice this will be come summer time…cold crisp glass of wine with some appy's or just sipping a glass of wine while relaxing on the deck or by the fire pit!

A girl can dream right!!??

Photo Challenge Day # 328

Day # 328

Sometimes you just have to dig out the old cook book and make something that momma use to make.
This was one of my all time favourites as a kid growing up in the Hennig home.
Everyone loved Pizza as a child growing up….esp. home made pizza…the cheese all melting! The tantalising smell through out the house!
But…
my favourite meal was something that I would or not tell my friends….as a child how do you explain my meal? Now as an adult…they all think this is like heaven from the oven!

Day # 328 "Zwiebelkuchen"

The wonderful smell of butter, onions, ham and bacon baking in the oven…oh my, dinner awaits!
Zwiebelkuchen translates to onion tart or onion pizza….
When mom made this for us for dinner, we knew that life was good in our household!

What is your favourite childhood food? Something from your heritage?

Photo Challenge Day # 327

Day # 327

On Easter Sunday, April 5th 1953, Herr Hennig had asked Fraulein Lutz to come to Canada and marry him. She said yes!
On March 10th, 1954, mom left Germany on the Beaverbrae II for St. Johns. Her trip ended with a train trip across Canada to Taber AB. where she sat outside the train station, on her trunk, waiting for her fiance to meet her and take her to Vauxhall AB.
Mom and Dad were married on April 2nd 1954 in Lethbridge AB.

Day # 327 " Still life of a cookbook"

Mr. & Mrs. Hennig's travels took them from Alberta to Saskatchewan and finally to British Columbia adding a daughter and 4 sons to the mix!

I think that our mom who was 20 years old at the time she left her family and everything familiar in Germany to immigrate to Canada, was pretty brave young lady.

Could you do this?

I dedicate today's photo challenge in honour of our mom who today loves to share her and dad's stories!

Photo Challenge Day # 326

Day # 326

Mom called me today, the tone of her voice, to me sounded like she had found a treasure. She had found something exciting and she had wanted to share it with me!
Mom had found a journal written by my father so many years ago.  Mom told me, that dad had written about their engagement in Stuttgart Germany, Easter Sunday, April 5th, 1953. He wrote about his trip across the Atlantic to Canada on the ship called, M.S. Nelly to Quebec City arriving on April 23, 1953. He's destination was Vauxhall, AB. To work on a farm.  He didn't know how to drive, but soon was driving a tractor. I do have pictures of dad driving a tractor and riding a horse. My dad was now an Albertan cowboy!  He had written so much that mom has spent a couple of days reading and rereading dad's journal! Yes, she did find a treasure!

Day # 326 "Still life of Dad's glasses and his Latin text book"
I am glad that dad had put his thoughts to paper, and that mom had found it and decided to read his journal.

I look at this photograph of my dad's glasses. I remember him wearing this pair when I was a little girl.
I truly do wonder about what my dad did see? His experiences, how he viewed the world...

This blog is dedicated to my dad!

Day #324

With the warm day time weather and cold night time weather, Mother Nature had created more icicles for us.
When I see droplets of water, whether it is drops of water on flowers and plants or dripping off an icicle, I am challenged to capture that droplet with my camera…freezing the action in time…

Day # 324 "Icicle droplet"

I sure hope you don't mind one more photograph of water drops dripping off an icicle. I know we still have 2 more months of winter, and more winter pictures to be expected.  I am very pleased when I get to see a drop of water frozen in my camera and an imagine in the droplet…I do the happy dance.

Day # 323

We went for a walk down to Wilson Park just before dusk …. it was a slippery walk considering last week we've had snow and rain which created hard crust on the snow and slippery walk ways.

Day # 323 "Nechako River at Wilson Park at Dusk"

Day # 323 "Nechako River, dusk, B & W"

Not only did you have to be careful walking because the paths were icy, but had to look out for doggie bombs as well…
When you got past all the obstacles it was worth standing at the snowy banks of the river and watch the ice flow down past.

Day # 322

Walking around Cottonwood Island Park today…..stop and listen….you can hear the water drops dripping off the branches….the crows cawing, the squirrels chattering, then there is the wood pecker, and of course all the chickadee's singing to each other. You know you are still in the city, you can hear the train cars shunting and city traffic noises.

Day #322 "Chickadee"

And if you stand still…. you may have a chickadee encounter….you don't even need to have bird seed with you!

Day #322 "Chickadee encounter"

What a treat this was today ! I was pretty excited, and I had to be on my toes with my camera to get these shots!

Photo Challenge Day #321

Day #321

We are always standing at barriers, fences, barricades in our life time. We see the grass greener on the other side of the fence. We admire the people who break the barriers and achieve their goals. For some of us the barriers are created out of cement.
I wonder what James sees? Where does he want to go? He is only one….what excites him on the other side of the baby gate?

Day # 321 "A one year olds barrier" in B&W

I hope when James and my other grandchildren are adults, that they don't let fences or other barriers to hold them back so they can achieve their dreams.

It has been a few years since I have baked Andrew a birthday cake. I was thrilled to be asked to help bake a birthday cake.  Aleah was in charge of mixing, stirring and decorating while Grandma Julie read the recipe and added the ingredients.

Day # 318

Today's photo challenge was taking a picture of my daughter in law, Danielle. She is engaged to my son, Andrew. Between them they have 3 children, Ashton, Aleah and James.
Danielle's super power other being a woman and a mom, includes holding a one year old on one hip while creating delicious dinner. Brushing Aleah's hair and entertaining James, and at the same time, looking fabulous and ready for work out side the home!

Day # 318 "Danielle"

I think she is a very talented lady as well.  We are lucky to have her in our family….The Pedde Fleet!

Day # 316

I have heard stories, almost an urban legend in this area about Andrew's French Onion soup feast. He does everything, from slicing, dicing the onions to grating the cheese and serving it all up!
Today was no different. When you park on the street in front of their house you could smell French Onion soup through out the neighbourhood!

Day # 316 "Drew's French Onion Soup"

With friends and family gathered around the kitchen and table, feasting until we could not move…a wonderful meal was enjoyed by all.
Good Job Andrew…. delicious  to the last drop!

Today was my grandson James 1st Birthday. Like all the other grand kids, I love watching them grow.
It has been a tradition since Ashton had his first birthday, that Grandma Julie is there to celebrate their first birthdays.
So, out comes the cameras and I did try and take a picture of every cute moment of James first birthday.

On a day like today where you are getting up early, packing bags, checking things out 2 or more times before your 6 am flight, changing planes and collecting my grandson. I didn't think I wouldn't have time to play with my camera. I did manage to take a photo of our adventure. Grandma Julie and Ashton on a West Jet Encore flight to Calgary!

Day # 314 "Grandma Julie and Ashton on West jet to Calgary!"

It was an all around good day. We made it to Calgary! I get to see Ashton for the weekend, because the last time was last summer.
Plus, some surprising great news!!!  Three more of my photographs hit the "Top 20 Class" in a photo contest categories I had entered before the year ended!

Day # 312

I have 2 icicles growing on my shed. When I had first noticed them way back in December they were only 4 and 8 inches long. They are now 29 and 33 inches long. The shorter one now has added a leg.

Day # 312 "Icicle"
I watch over my icicles like I watch my flowers growing in my flower beds. I do wonder how long the icicles will grow before they break off.

Day # 310

Outside we have winter, the yard is covered in a blanket of white snow. The air is cold, the trees are covered in fluffy snow. Going for a walk you crunch as you walk.
Inside the house my plants sit by the window, and I see new leaves, buds….life!

Day # 310 "Macro of Asparagus  Fern"

The actual size of the asparagus was only an inch long! So soft and dainty.
